What is Primary PE and Sport Premium?
The government is spending over £450 million on improving physical education (PE) and sport in primary schools over the 3 academic years 2013 to 2014, 2014 to 2015 and 2015 to 2016. The premium should be used to improve the quality and breadth of PE and sport provision and provide new and substantial primary school sport. The funding is being jointly provided by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport, and will see money going directly to primary school Headteachers to spend on improving the quality of sport and PE for all their children.
This year the funding for the Sports Premium has been raised. Last year schools with 17 or more eligible pupils received £8,000 plus an additional payment of £5 per pupil. This year schools with 17 or more eligible pupils will receive £16,000 and an additional £10 per pupil. At Horizon, we will be using most of the Sport Premium money on an external agency who specialize in teaching PE.
They will come in one day a week to teach all ages within our school. This will be the same company we have used for the previous 4 years and so far, they have been extremely beneficial to the health and wellbeing of the children at Horizon Primary Academy.
How is the funding spent?
Funding can be spent on the following:-
- Hire specialist PE teachers to work with primary teachers during PE lessons (Played - see impact report for further information)
- Support and involve the least active children by running after-school sports clubs
- Provide resources and training courses in PE and sport for teachers
- Run sport competitions or increase pupils’ participation in the School Games
Accountability
Schools will be held to account for how they spend the sport funding. Ofsted will strengthen its coverage of Sport and PE within Inspectors’ Handbook and supporting guidance. Schools will be required to include details about their sporting provision on their school website, alongside their curriculum details.

Sports Premium Action Plans and Impact Reports:
The effect it will have:
The aim, with regards to the sports funding, at Horizon Primary Academy is to make sure that the money provided has an impact on participation and attainment for our children in PE, and to also have an impact on the teaching of PE for years to come.
We would like every child to have the opportunity to achieve and progress in their PE lessons, and provide chances for children to try new sports in after school clubs, whether they are being lead by the staff at Horizon Primary Academy, or outside companies.
We would like the teachers at Horizon Primary Academy to enhance their CPD on teaching PE and gain confidence in the teaching of sports they may not have experienced before. JGPlayEd will be used to provide CPD for our teachers, giving them the opportunity to learn from skilled sports specialists. They will help with planning and also provide targeted lessons for SEN and Greater Depth children in each class.
We believe that the allocation of the sports premium funding you at Horizon Primary Academy will allow us to achieve these aims.
How will we make sure that these improvements will be sustainable?
The intenstive CPD programme will allow all teachers to confidently and effectively teach PE across the school. The increased competitiion will create a legacy of partipation and competition. The increased physical activity at lunchtimes, after school and in scouting will create a healthier school cohort, allowing them to participate even more in physical activity and make healthier choices for their future lives.
